Synopsis

High school is supposed to be about studying, socializing, and marching-band practice. Not fighting vampires. Then one night flipped my world inside out―now, my life sucks. But it isn’t all bad. I’m at a slayer academy, learning things like the real origin of vamps and how to make serious weapons out of thin air.

Every last one of them will pay for what they did. I’m doing great.

Until I come face-to-face with the actual vampire prince…and I’m not sure of anything anymore. Vampires are supposed to be soul-sucking demons. But Khamari is…something else. He’s intelligent and reasonable―and he seems to know things about me that could change everything.

He’s also hiding something big, even from his own kind. And when a threat from an ancient evil is so extreme that a vampire will team up with a slayer to take it down, it isn’t just my need for revenge that’s at stake anymore.

It’s the whole damn world.

Review

It has been quite a while since I have read a vampire book that I enjoyed half as much as I enjoyed this one! The story gripped me from page one and it was so hard for me to put it down after I started.

Our heroine, Raven, was so relatable and I really did like her as a character. Her attitude concerning the world around her didn’t really change, but she did have quite a bit of character development in regards to her training and the relationships she made around her. I really appreciated how the author gave Raven her power and didn’t make her wait too long to figure out how to use them. Harris’s strategy of giving Raven the innate knowledge to use her power gave the story more room to focus on other aspects.

The story itself was well-paced and did a good job giving us an equal view of both of our MCs. Their little slow burn relationship was *chef’s kiss* and I really cannot wait to see more of them in the upcoming sequel. Khamari could easily be on everyone’s book boyfriend list. I am excited to see how Khamari handles his new situation he is currently in and how Raven can fit into it.

The magic and power system was also really unique. I never thought about the fact that alchemy and vampirism can go hand in hand. Harris’s ability to weave the origin story of the slayers and vampires into the main plot really added a lot to the build-up that the cliff-hanger ending left us on. I really hope we learn more about certain characters that have a huge tie to Alexander in the next book.

I will be preordering the sequel as soon as I am able!

TV and Movie Recommendations Based on the Book: Sign of the Slayer

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003): Slayers, or the “Chosen Ones”, are chosen by fate to battle against vampires, demons and other forces of darkness. Buffy wants to live a normal life, but as the series progresses, she learns to embrace her destiny. Like previous Slayers, Buffy is aided by a Watcher, who guides, teaches and trains her.

Buffy and Raven share so many personality traits and on top of that they are both “chosen” to fight vampires!

The Blade Trilogy (1998-2004): A half-mortal, half-immortal is out to avenge his mother’s death and rid the world of vampires. The modern-day technologically advanced vampires he is going after are in search of his special blood type needed to summon an evil god who plays a key role in their plan to execute the human race.

Blade is a made vampire similar to Khamari and they both share the talent of being able to daywalk. I think that Khamari will play more of vampire slaying role in the next book, but who knows 👀

The Queen of the Damned (2004): Follows the legendary vampire Lestat, who has reinvented himself as a rock star in the contemporary American music scene. His music wakes Akasha, the queen of all vampires, and inspires her desire to make Lestat her king. Akasha’s malevolent power is so great that all the immortal vampires must stand against her if they want to survive. Meanwhile, a young London woman with a fascination for the dark side falls in love with Lestat.

The maker of all known vampires, Akasha, shares a lot of Alexander the Great’s diabolical plans!

Vampire Academy (2022): In a world of privilege and glamour, two young women’s friendship transcends their strikingly different classes as they prepare to complete their education and enter royal vampire society.

Vampires and a school that teaches you how to wield power. and fight vampires?? Need I say more??
